Bespoke furniture crafted from reclaimed materials
Exploration of the potential offered by a stock of limestone slabs originally used in fashion show scenography. Provided technical support to the architect in the development of an entire furniture collection designed through the creative reuse of these stone panels. The slabs were transformed into table tops, cabinet doors, swing counterweights, and other bespoke elements. Only bio-based materials were used alongside the stone in the fabrication process.
The natural dialogue between wood and stone — their contrasting yet complementary characteristics — gives rise to furniture pieces that are both refined and understated.
Balançoires
The bases and frames of the swings were the main focus of study for Elioth. Their structure was designed using “the right material in the right place”, combining the lightness of wood for the framework with the weight of stone to ballast the base while also forming a high-quality floor surface.
The weight of the stone base was carefully calculated to prevent any risk of lifting during use, and the structural elements of the swing frames (wooden framework and joints) were dimensioned to withstand the associated loads.
The frame of the base, made of reconstituted solid wood, serves as a link between the stone base and the wooden structure. The timber cuts were designed so that the stone rests solely on a simple seating detail. All other joints were also conceived to minimize the use of additional components (particularly steel), favoring instead traditional wood-to-wood joinery — mortise and tenon joints and wooden wedges — in keeping with artisanal craftsmanship.
The only steel element present in the frames is a single assembly bolt located at the intersection of the uprights, serving as a hinge point :
Other furniture elements
All the furniture designed by COVE Architectes was conceived according to the same principles of using bio-based and reclaimed materials.
The rectangular tables were made from assemblies of solid oak battens combined with reclaimed limestone tops.
The furniture pieces were designed to be easily movable and partially demountable when necessary, in order to reduce the weight of elements to be handled.
This project serves as a reminder that designing and innovating with a low-carbon approach, at every scale, lies at the very core of ELIOTH’s philosophy.
